The main characters of The Love Suicides at Amijima include Jihei, a merchant who is married and a father to two young children. He falls in love with Koharu, a woman who has been forced to work as a prostitute in the hopes of repaying her debt. The story is complicated by the play's third major character, Tahei. Tahei is Jihei's rival, and in spite of the fact that Koharu and Jihei are in love, Tahei plans to buy Koharu out of prostitution for himself. The conflict eventually leads to Koharu and Jihei committing suicide so they can be reborn into the next life, where they can have an honorable romance with each other. One way in which these main characters may surprise the reader or viewer, though, is that they are not traditionally played by actors. Instead, they are played by puppets.
