Travis, the main character in Old Yeller, is a young boy who is growing into adulthood. Five words that would describe him are youthful, energetic, adventurous, loyal, and strong. Obviously, he is youthful, as he is a young boy on the verge of manhood. He is energetic, as he’s an adolescent boy who likes to run around and be active, which is part of what connects him to the dog. He is also adventurous, which fits his frontier lifestyle well. His loyalty is clear because he does everything he can to help his family and because he loves and is devoted to Old Yeller. Finally, he’s strong, as he does what is necessary, no matter how difficult. In the end of the story, he is able to shoot and kill the dog because he is rabid, ending the dog’s misery and saving his family in the process.
