In "The Woman Who Fell From the Sky: The Iroquois Story of Creation" a number of animals attempted to save the woman as she fell to Earth. In the creation myth, the sky woman is pregnant with twins, which upsets her husband. He tears up the tree at the center of their world, which gives light to their land, and pushes her through the hole, where she ends up tumbling down to the watery Earth, as no land had been created yet.
Watching her fall, many animals rushed to her aid. The birds alerted the other animals what was happening, and a beaver dove to try and create land but failed, as did a duck and several other birds. Finally, animals succeeded at bringing up mud and putting it on the back of the turtle, who would bear the world, but not without many casualties.
